DTAG was delighted to be able to provide an update into its activities at the community groups lunch, expertly organised by Emma Scott and Dorchester Town Council on Friday lunchtime. Giles Watts talked about events such as ‘Streets Alive’ with local children, ‘guerilla gardening’ clearing new cycle and walking routes, and the group’s input into plans to improve active travel routes across the town.
Attendees at the community lunch also heard from Chris Peck of Dorset Council UK on developing proposals to improve number of junctions and routes for residents walking, wheeling or cycling in the town. These include pinch points like Maumbury junction, and Williams Avenue/ Bridport Road by the hospital.
Chris pointed out that nearly 1 in 4 Dorchester households do not have access to a car, and so rely on active travel or public transport to get around. By improving safety and access for more vulnerable road users, a better environment for active travel makes it a more attractive option, which itself reduces road congestion and air pollution.
Attended by a wide range of community groups, councillors and the Mayor, the event was useful for networking and information. Many thanks to the Town Council for running this.
This was a really useful and well run event, allowing Dorchester’s community groups to work together and learn from each other.
