Westbury line closure

Westbury line closure

Our friends at South Wessex Community Rail Partnership have informed us that all railway lines through Westbury will be closed for major maintenance work at Westbury station from Friday 27th December 2024 to Thursday 23rd January 2025 inclusive.

  • All rail services from Weymouth towards Bristol and Gloucester will stop at Frome
  • All rail services originating from Gloucester and Bristol towards Weymouth will stop at Trowbridge
  • There will be rail replacement buses between Frome and Trowbridge

Timetables will necessarily be affected as buses cannot run as predictably. Roadwork diversions to the north of Trowbridge may mean buses could be further affected by heavy traffic.

Services between the Southwest and Reading/Paddington, which normally call at Westbury, will stop at Frome instead. There are some timetable changes so those intending to use these services should check the Journey Planner.

  • SWR services along the Heart of Wessex Line north of Yeovil Pen Mill will not run
  • Some SWR services which normally run through Westbury will instead be diverted to Yeovil Pen Mill

There will be no parking at Frome Station for the duration of the closure to ensure there is no obstruction to the rail replacement bus service.

Before you set out on a rail journey on the Heart of Wessex Line during this period do check journey planners – links are on the DTAG homepage.

  1. I was at Westbury train station last week. I had to change there as I was going onward to Port Talbot in Wales. A lot of work was already being done. Parts of the station were closed already. They only had a few outside temp toilets in the car park which were just appalling. So hopefully the main work is done on time and when it opens again it will be fit for purpose.
