Key Updates from Council Meeting on Cycling Improvement Works

Dorset Council recently held its quarterly Dorset Cyclists Liaison Meeting (Western Area) on Monday, March 31st, bringing together local representatives to discuss upcoming cycling and transport improvements. Covering Dorchester, Weymouth, Bridport, Sherborne, and surrounding areas.

The meeting featured updates from Chris Peck, Dorset Council Transport Planner) and Charlotte Sullivan (Dorset Council Active Travel Officer) on various projects aimed at improving travel for cyclists and pedestrians. Giles Watts was there to represent Dorchester Transport Action Group.

Key Highlights from the Meeting

  • Maumbury Rings Works Nearing Completion
Ongoing improvement works at Maumbury Rings in Dorchester are progressing well and are expected to be completed within the next two months.
  • Junction Upgrades for Williams Avenue
Plans to enhance both ends of Williams Avenue in Dorchester will begin this autumn, aiming to improve traffic flow and safety.
  • Changes on Damers Road
In January, the Dorset Transport Action Group (DTAG) facilitated discussions between Dorset Council and town councillors regarding alterations near the Case and Brewer Fish and Chip shop on Damers Road. As a result:
    • Four parking spaces outside the shop will remain.
    • Pavements will be widened.
    • Junction improvements at Williams Avenue have been incorporated into the plans.
    • A consultation on these changes is now underway, and Dorset Council is optimistic about their approval.
  • Future Active Travel Improvements
A long-term Active Travel Improvement Plan, spanning 3-4 years, has been drafted. This plan will support the upcoming Local Transport Plan (LTP4), which is set to go to public consultation this autumn.

With these developments, Dorset Council is working towards making the area more accessible and cycle-friendly. Stay tuned for further updates as these projects move forward.
