Opening of Refurbished Dorchester South Railway Station – but more to do

Opening of Refurbished Dorchester South Railway Station – but more to do

Representatives from Dorchester Transport Action Group were pleased to be present at the official opening of South Station improvements on Friday 4 April.

There was a clear consensus from all parties present that the job is not yet complete in terms of making the station fully accessible between platforms.

Giles Watts, Secretary Dorchester Transport Action Group, said “We compliment South Western trains and Network Rail for the improvements to the station, ticket office, waiting room and access area, all of which make for a much better experience for travellers.

I am especially pleased with the new murals, planters and flower beds which make the station a much more attractive and colourful place; and for the introduction of a Beryl bike stand which enhances the station as a multi-modal transport hub for connectivity between trains, busses, coaches, taxis and now bikes as well.”

Stewart Palmer, Chair Dorchester Transport Action Group, added “It was great to be there.  However we will continue to press the Department for Transport, who hold the funds for ‘access for all’ schemes, to make Dorchester South Station a priority for a new disabled compliant bridge.  We know we have the support of the Town Council, Dorset Council and our Member of Parliament in this endeavour.

This is not just about those local residents directly affected, it is about making travel to Dorchester by train for our vital tourist economy easier and stress free”.
